Clean Up Tuesday

Sep 01

We’re busy today knocking items off the to-do list. We thought we’d share what we’re working on as it will ultimately lead to a faster, better experience for all our users.

It’s all about making your life easier – and while we enjoy the double entendre on our error page, in a perfect world you would never see it! But, some of you ran into that very screen while trying to export your business plan as either a Pdf or Word document.

A few of you also ran into an odd looking exported plan – in the form of completely black pages! While those of you who appreciate the “less is more” or “quality over quantity” philosophy for a business plan might have briefly enjoyed this, we still want to make sure each plan comes through in a more readable format.

Technical details aside, we’ve pushed a set of updates live that address both of these issues. We’re also working on moving our static assets over to a new server which should help browsers download this content faster.

More to come, we’ve also got a couple new features brewing that we think you’re going to enjoy – specifically around helping you integrate your financial model into your business plan more efficiently and delivering you the financial information you need while you write the plan.

More to come!

TheIdeaStartup.com Launches Business Plan Development Platform

Jul 20

Offers Powerful Business Planning Software Tools for Tomorrows Entrepreneurs

SOMERVILLE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TheIdeaStartup, an end-to-end business plan and financial forecasting development tool, today announced general availability of its solution for business students and entrepreneurs. TheIdeaStartup is a web-based platform that combines real-time communication, collaboration and business planning software in a team friendly environment. First launched as a beta version in January 2009, MIT Sloan School and Northeastern University have been testing the system and both schools have plans to implement the software for business classes this fall.

The system is ideal for collaborative coursework in MBA programs. Currently, most students developing these plans are often faced with ad-hoc methodologies to incorporate financial data, market industry research, and various other components of the process. Development and collaboration tools allow teams to work together and, more importantly, leverage each team member’s skills appropriately.

“I’m strongly suggesting that my students use TheIdeaStartup platform for future development of their business plans in my New Enterprise course,” said Howard Anderson, MIT Sloan School professor and founder of Yankee Group. “Often too much time is spent on the minutia of formatting and setting up collaborative systems rather than on the core strategy development needed in a stellar business plan. With TheIdeaStartup students create bottom-up financial projections in a uniform manner, something that will continue to improve the quality of the business plans our students present.”

With the IdeaStartup platform users can enter critical data points into the system and receive projection information that will be necessary in assessing the feasibility of a concept. TheIdeaStartup simplifies the development of future projections, an integral first step in developing any business plan. This process enables the user to focus their time into refining their business model, strategy, and industry assumptions.

“Our platform will make it easier for students, entrepreneurs, and business development teams to write these plans and create financial projections,” said TheIdeaStartup Co-Founder Ray Di Nizo. “TheIdeaStartup helps you deliver what is ultimately a stronger business plan to your audience much faster. While we don’t supply the content of the plan—and the viability of the plan is dependent on the quality of that information—we do give entrepreneurs the tools they need to make the plan as strong as possible.

The site includes social networking, online team collaboration, and business planning software in an online environment designed to foster the innovation needed for a start-up to thrive. The networking aspect even gives idea-owners the ability to search for others with specific skill-sets and prior experience needed to get an idea developed.

Combining the best features of business planning software and business social networks such as LinkedIn; TheIdeaStartup.com offers a new approach to the business plan development process. Other features include:

  • Business “Plan” development tools with integrated real-time team collaboration
  • Powerful financial modeling
  • Dashboard and RSS newsfeeds
  • Databases for various types of documents
  • Social networking twist to connect with other budding entrepreneurs

About TheIdeaStartup

Co-Founders Raymond Di Nizo and Matt Chepeleff formulated TheIdeaStartup platform while in a business course at Northeastern University in 2006. Faced with no structured system for creating pro-forma financial projections, Ray and Matt set out to build a networking program with business plan tools that would promote idea collaboration and support the development of new business initiatives. Upon graduation in 2008, they formed TheIdeaStartup to help roll out the platform. TheIdeaStartup is headquartered in Somerville, MA. More information can be found at www.theideastartup.com.

Update Thursday: Some Fixes and Additions to the financial model…

Apr 15

We were already a fan of the new financial model - but only weeks old we’ve already made changes and updates. There will be even more to come… But for now, here’s what we’ve changed:

  • There were a couple glitches with Public Ideas - specificially around loading and saving data which we’ve ironed out.
  • For some reason business insurance could be set over 50% of revenue (north of 300%, which doesn’t make any sense).  We’ve reeled this in and capped the assumption at 50% - making the screen easier to use.
  • Converted Sale Price and Unit Price to dynamic assumptions that can be adjusted over time - no more static price and cost for products!
  • Best for Last: Financial Model Step 5 - we now show you your cash flow against changes to Long Term Debt Additions, Preferred Stock Issue/Buyback, and Common Stock Issue/Buyback.  It updates in real time making financing your business over time even easier!

We think these are important updates and we’re exicited to roll them out.  Please continue to let us know your feedback and about your experience with the new model.

An Introduction to Business Plans

Apr 10

Business plans can help perform a number of tasks for those who write and read them. They’re used by investment-seeking entrepreneurs to convey their vision to potential investors. They may also be used by firms that are trying to attract key employees, prospect for new business, deal with suppliers or simply to understand how to manage their companies better.

Fantastic Updates: New Financial Model & Individual/Team Chat

Apr 03

Alright, we’re really excited to get these updates online…we’ve been hard at work for weeks and it’s time to share our work with all of you. Aside from several small fixes and enhancements, there are two new updates you’ve got to check out.

New Financial Model:

The old model was really more of a proof-of-concept, the new model is just awesome. First off, it covers all the bases - from manufacturing to financing the business, we’ve got a five step process that covers the inputs. Second, the inputs themselves are changing - instead of assuming each assumption stays the same for the full five years, we’ve got a simple new interface that allows you to plot changes in assumptions over time. Here are some screenshots:

You can form simple curves, fit curves to points you plot and customize it all. It’s slick.

But there’s more. Our financial engine - which churns out the calculations and pro-forma statements based on your inputs is more powerful than ever before. The engine takes over 1000 inputs (which sounds like a lot, but thanks to our new user interfaces you can enter 20 or 60 inputs in seconds!), processes north of 50,000 calculations, and generates a fully-functional Excel version of the model all in seconds. The Excel export is particularly exciting, as it allows you to take the entire model offline for customization and testing. We’ve got all our calculations built into this model for you too, which means you can make changes on the fly in this file and get the same quick and easy pro-forma statements in Excel.

Individual and Team Chat:

We love Gmail over here - we use it everyday to keep tabs on our email - but we also take advantage of the built in chat all the time. We thought it’d be great if you could do the same on our site. So we did, and we’re proud to share this with you. After building it we realized why every site out there doesn’t have real-time chat…it’s a technical challenge for sure.

Either way, what we’ve got is a new bar at the bottom of every page that will probably remind you of Facebook’s chat (thanks to the position and right aligned available connections list). As you sign in, you’ll be plugged into chat and be able to converse with anyone in your network who’s online.

But as cool as chat alone can be - we see real value in teams being able to talk smoothly online while working on the plan or financials. So, we did this too. If you click on Available Connections you’ll see both Individual Chat and Idea Team Chat. The latter allows an entire team to chat with each other all in real-time - whether it’s 3 or 13 of you working on the idea.

The system even senses dropped connections to the server and alerts you - it can even tell whether you’ve been disconnected from the Internet or if it’s an issues specific to TheIdeaStartup - which of course it never will be! :-) Abobe Flash is required to participate in chat - though you’ll find there aren’t any flash interfaces - it’s all built right into the site.

Be sure to checkout these new additions and let us know what you think - we’d love to get your feedback. If you don’t already have an account, let us know and we’ll get you online as soon as we can. Per the norm, we hope the new features continue to run smoothly and provide little to no interruption for any users - but should you run into any issues, drop us a line via team [at] theideastartup dot com and we’ll help sort things out.

More good stuff to come.
