Preface for this series of posts: I thought it might be a good idea to walk through developing financial projections – starting with the revenue model. Sure, I want to show everyone how our tools make this process easier, but I also want to point out that garbage in = garbage out. There’s a lot that goes into business planning! But let’s take a look at some simple examples and see how it might all come together.
Developing solid financial projections is not an easy task for an entrepreneur. Doing so requires us to think really thoroughly about our business. We have to think about who our customers are, how we’re going to reach them, how many and which flavor products we can sell to them, how much advertising spend we need, how many sales and marketing resources will we bring aboard, etc. This is hardly the entire list, which can be overwhelming!
But that’s not all. It’s not as simple as running through a list of questions and providing answers. All your “answers” have to link together. For example, a huge sales team can be constrained by tiny advertising budgets that don’t generate enough leads. Conversely, a tiny sales team could be overwhelmed by response to advertising.
Now, while these examples are, intentionally, pretty simple, if we look at this from a higher level there are a few real important checks we must be sure we pass to have a successful business. We need products that add value to customers. We need customers. We need distribution to get our products to our customers. We need a marketing plan. We need an operational plan. This all has to link…
Once we’ve thought through all of this we need to show what will happen financially if we execute our plan as designed (conservative financial projections are usually best for internal use and strategic planning. Projections that yield hockey-stick growth charts tend (a) to be unrealistic and (b) only work when you’re pitching to a venture capitalist…in 2000).
Assumptions are the bridge between the strategies you’ve thought out and the numeric representation of your company you might be struggling to develop. Let’s walk through a simple example.
You manufacture and sell widgets. You make widgets, store them in inventory, your marketing plan generates leads, your sales staff closes as many leads as possible, and you ship the widgets. It’s a straightforward business model. Now let’s make up some assumptions around the revenue model:
- 5,000 leads in year 1
- 5% sales conversion rate (1 in 20 leads turns into a sale)
- You have 2 products, a “Basic” ($100) and “Premium” ($300) widget
- 80% of orders are for the “Basic” model and 20% are for the “Premium” model
Mathematically, for our basic widget this equates to: 5,000 x 5% x 80% x $100 = $20,000 for year 1. The premium widget is: 5,000 x 5% x 20% x $300 or $15,000. This might be a simple example but it illustrates how important assumptions and how much leverage an assumption might have on the result (try a 6% conversion rate…it yields a 20% increase in revenue). We could dive deeper and look at seasonality of sales, up-selling customers, new versus repeat customers, optimizing sales tactics, other distribution channels, etc. But that’s not the point of this article, so let’s continue.
We’ve established that assumptions are at the core of financial projections. They’re the input and foundation. Once they’re developed we need to (1) do the math to get the big financial picture on an annual basis and (2) explain these assumptions in the business plan.
Focusing back on the revenue model, let’s round out this first post by looking at how it’s structured. While it can also be called a Sales Forecast, in either case this statement produces your “top line” (revenue or sales). A consolidated statement will take a higher level perspective in the form of annual or quarterly figures, though you could easily look at your model monthly as needed. Consolidated or not, the statement is going to tell you 3 things about each of your products:
- How many units you sell
- The average price you sell each unit at (average because prices can change over time)
- Total revenue (or units sold times price)
A revenue model or sales forecast might look something like (click for larger):
You might notice that there aren’t very many assumptions (or inputs) that feed a revenue model. You’d be correct in this observation. The inputs and arithmetic behind this statement are simple. But don’t confuse simple for unimportant or trivial. After all, the golden formula for business is profit = revenue – costs. The revenue model gives you half of that equation!
In a series of posts to follow over the next couple weeks I’ll walk through the other financial statements (P&L, Income, Cash Flow) and look at how assumptions feed into them and how they relate to each other.

We’re busy today knocking items off the to-do list. We thought we’d share what we’re working on as it will ultimately lead to a faster, better experience for all our users.
It’s all about making your life easier – and while we enjoy the double entendre on our error page, in a perfect world you would never see it! But, some of you ran into that very screen while trying to export your business plan as either a Pdf or Word document.
A few of you also ran into an odd looking exported plan – in the form of completely black pages! While those of you who appreciate the “less is more” or “quality over quantity” philosophy for a business plan might have briefly enjoyed this, we still want to make sure each plan comes through in a more readable format.
Technical details aside, we’ve pushed a set of updates live that address both of these issues. We’re also working on moving our static assets over to a new server which should help browsers download this content faster.
More to come, we’ve also got a couple new features brewing that we think you’re going to enjoy – specifically around helping you integrate your financial model into your business plan more efficiently and delivering you the financial information you need while you write the plan.

Offers Powerful Business Planning Software Tools for Tomorrows Entrepreneurs
SOMERVILLE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–TheIdeaStartup, an end-to-end business plan and financial forecasting development tool, today announced general availability of its solution for business students and entrepreneurs. We were already a fan of the new financial model - but only weeks old we’ve already made changes and updates. There will be even more to come… But for now, here’s what we’ve changed:
- There were a couple glitches with Public Ideas - specificially around loading and saving data which we’ve ironed out.
- For some reason business insurance could be set over 50% of revenue (north of 300%, which doesn’t make any sense). We’ve reeled this in and capped the assumption at 50% - making the screen easier to use.
- Converted Sale Price and Unit Price to dynamic assumptions that can be adjusted over time - no more static price and cost for products!
- Best for Last: Financial Model Step 5 - we now show you your cash flow against changes to Long Term Debt Additions, Preferred Stock Issue/Buyback, and Common Stock Issue/Buyback. It updates in real time making financing your business over time even easier!

Alright, we’re really excited to get these updates online…we’ve been hard at work for weeks and it’s time to share our work with all of you. Aside from several small fixes and enhancements, there are two new updates you’ve got to check out.
New Financial Model:
The old model was really more of a proof-of-concept, the new model is just awesome. First off, it covers all the bases - from manufacturing to financing the business, we’ve got a five step process that covers the inputs. Second, the inputs themselves are changing - instead of assuming each assumption stays the same for the full five years, we’ve got a simple new interface that allows you to plot changes in assumptions over time. Here are some screenshots:
You can form simple curves, fit curves to points you plot and customize it all. It’s slick.
But there’s more. Our financial engine - which churns out the calculations and pro-forma statements based on your inputs is more powerful than ever before. The engine takes over 1000 inputs (which sounds like a lot, but thanks to our new user interfaces you can enter 20 or 60 inputs in seconds!), processes north of 50,000 calculations, and generates a fully-functional Excel version of the model all in seconds. The Excel export is particularly exciting, as it allows you to take the entire model offline for customization and testing. We’ve got all our calculations built into this model for you too, which means you can make changes on the fly in this file and get the same quick and easy pro-forma statements in Excel.
Individual and Team Chat:
We love Gmail over here - we use it everyday to keep tabs on our email - but we also take advantage of the built in chat all the time. We thought it’d be great if you could do the same on our site. So we did, and we’re proud to share this with you. After building it we realized why every site out there doesn’t have real-time chat…it’s a technical challenge for sure.
Either way, what we’ve got is a new bar at the bottom of every page that will probably remind you of Facebook’s chat (thanks to the position and right aligned available connections list). As you sign in, you’ll be plugged into chat and be able to converse with anyone in your network who’s online.
But as cool as chat alone can be - we see real value in teams being able to talk smoothly online while working on the plan or financials. So, we did this too. If you click on Available Connections you’ll see both Individual Chat and Idea Team Chat. The latter allows an entire team to chat with each other all in real-time - whether it’s 3 or 13 of you working on the idea.
The system even senses dropped connections to the server and alerts you - it can even tell whether you’ve been disconnected from the Internet or if it’s an issues specific to TheIdeaStartup - which of course it never will be! 
Abobe Flash is required to participate in chat - though you’ll find there aren’t any flash interfaces - it’s all built right into the site.

Well, I think we can call the launch a success - we managed to get almost 300 invites out today - and we got a ton of new users and a lot of positive feedback since 5pm yesterday.
We only had a handful of minor glitches to work out as well as one larger glitch with the network request/accept process - but we’ve got that and the other issues sorted out.
